The Programme Assistant Inclusive Education (IE) will provide technical, logistical, and administrative support for our UNICEF-funded education project in Liberia which will strengthen the capacity of teachers to include children with disabilities in their classes. The programme will assess the training needs of teachers, develop disability inclusive education resources, and develop the capacity of Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs) to deliver high quality inclusive education training.
The post-holder will support the Programme Officer in coordinating programme activities and working with the Ministry of Education (MoE), TTIs, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and other stakeholders to promote a system strengthening approach to teacher development.
- Work with the programme officer, Sightsavers Education GTLs, Liberia Country Office, and partners to design activities appropriate for the local context.
- Support advocacy with the MoE, relevant education and other stakeholders at different levels, to secure their understanding and commitment to the development of inclusive education teacher training.
- Support alignment of programme with other significant donor education projects operating in Liberia.
- Support and assist programme officer and Sightsavers Education GTLs in working with TTIs to identify ways of strengthening their capacity to provide/facilitate disability inclusive teacher training through visits to and interviews with TTIs.
- Support all aspects of project delivery at all phases of the project cycle.
- Contribute to a desk review of current inclusive education policy, pre- and post- teacher training, and organise interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders.
- Work with Education GTLs, TTIs, and other stakeholders to co-create and pilot training materials for lecturers and classroom teachers.
- Support liaison with schools and TTIs, develop a functional appraisal system to capture the training needs of teachers and link this directly to teacher training programmes.
- Work with programme officer, GTLs, the MoE, and the TTIs to devise resilient systems for clustering schools with local TTIs to improve ongoing disability inclusive training.
- Provide logistical and technical support to the programme officer for a situation analysis of the Liberian education system (to be carried out in 2022).
Knowledge, skills and experience for Programme Assistant IE
Essential:
- Tertiary degree or equivalent qualification within Education, Special Needs, Psychology
- Teaching experience, ideally with children with disabilities
- Knowledge of international and national agreements, legislation, and policies relating to disability and education
- Experience in implementing programmes
- Experience of working partnerships with stakeholders from government, civil society, including educational system
- An understanding of and commitment to the realization of the rights of people with disabilities
Desirable:
- Experience of training teachers and developing training materials
- Experience of the disability sector and gender mainstreaming
- Knowledge of current issues and best practices in disability inclusive education
